SERVAS is a worldwide, non-profit peace organisation that - through personal contact - tries to create better understanding among people on Earth. SERVAS’ aim is to bring people together, no matter what their origin, religion, language or colour. We might become good friends if we learn to understand one another! All members are volunteers. The status of SERVAS INTERNATIONAL in the UN group ECOSOC is NGO (non-governmental organisation). In addition to this, SERVAS INTERNATIONAL participates as an observer in the meetings of the Human Rights Council and can express itself orally or in writing regarding issues of the order of the day.
SERVAS was founded in 1949 by a group of Danish students. Nowadays SERVAS is spread all over the world with a particular concentration in America, Europe, India, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In Switzerland, there were 18 hosts already in the fifties. Today, there are around 230 hosts in Switzerland who open their doors to travellers.
Over 15'000 SERVAS hosts in more than 120 countries welcome SERVAS travellers and let them take part in their own lives for a couple of days.
Servas is a peace organisation and tries to achieve values like peace, understanding, tolerance, social fairness by encouraging contacts among people on an international level.
